I woke up at 5:30, got dressed, made myself some coffee and went out onto Chris & Jerry’s front porch. Babs joined me about an hour later and we enjoyed the crisp mountain air and beautiful views.
Later Chris and Jerry join us and we reminisced some more. After enjoying a croissant, we had to head back down the mountain. The ride back to Grand Junction takes us through the Colorado Monument National park with its breath taking views.
After arriving at the La Quinta, we loaded up the Acadia, said our goodbyes, and started on our journey home.
The scenery was views of magnificent mountains and a snow run off flood swollen Colorado River.
This part of I-70 has been featured on the Modern Marvels cable TV show. Much of the road through the mountains is on bridges and highway constructed on the edge of the mountains.
We at lunch at a place called Shoonys. We ended up there because I thought the road sign said Shoney’s. Anyway, the food was good.
We continued up and across the Rocky Mountains, stopping at the Vail, Colorado Summit rest area.
Vail, CO Condos
Leaving the mountains, we passed through Denver, just in time for the evening rush hour where we spent an hour in stop and go traffic.
Once through Denver the scenery was once again a “whole lot of nothing” except this time it was flat farm land.
We decided to stop at Limon, CO and luckily Babs said she thought we should call a hotel because it was getting late. The first three hotels we called were booked. Finally the Quality Inn had four rooms left. That is where we are tonight. Tomorrow we continue toward home.
Babs Says: Eastward Ho!
