Holy Tornado, what a night last night! Babs and I had gotten into our sleepwear and were ready for bed at 9 pm. However, we were watching the local Channel 4 news show which was airing continuous weather updates. We watched a tornado moving toward us and decided to get dressed again. We looked at the guest book but there was no mention of a shelter in the hotel. We were on the top floor and decided that the bathtub was not an option, but we settled for the stairwell if it became necessary to take cover. The thunder, lighting, and wind was unbelievable but we heard no sirens. About ten, it turned into more of a wicked thunderstorm and we went to bed. A around 2 am, round two started and woke Babs who woke me. However, she waited until the tail-end of the storm to do so.
We met a guy going down to breakfast and I commented that it was quite a show last night. He asked if I had meant downstairs and I said no, the storm. He said he had thought that I had meant the fully, guest packed, safe room that everyone went to when the sirens sounded!
A tornado touched down about a mile north of us and another wiped out a Holiday Inn Express 10 miles west of us on the other side of St. Louis.
Babs snapped some photos of the St. Louis Arch as we motored through St. Louis in the rain.
We drove in the rain for most of the day. We stopped in a town named Marceline, which was the boyhood home of Walt Disney. It’s main street is said to be the one that he patterned Disneyland Main Street after.
We ate lunch at a little corner cafe decorated with lots of photos of Disney at the town. The food was home made to order, slow but good!
For an hour or two we had blue sky’s and sun, so Babs snapped a couple of shots of Missouri’s beautiful rolling countryside.
Shortly after that, the clouds thickened and once again it began to rain. The rain continued all the way to our destination, Harrah’s Hotel and Casino where our “free room and supper” was duly paid for with my gambling losses. Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch?
It’s now 9 pm and it’s still raining outside. Tomorrow we head toward Ft. Collins, CO where we’ll meet Denny & Jane on Monday to continue our trip.
Babs Says: It’s amazing how bad cigarette smoke smells when you are a non-smoker.
